Believe it or not, Weber Grills are the core of a major revolution in outdoor grilling that took place just after World War II. George Stephen Sr., who lived in Mount Prospect, Ill., was fed up with fighting the elements while "open brazier" grilling at home.

He became determined to correct this problem once and for all. And the rest is history....

Since he worked for a metal fabricating company called Weber Brothers Metal Works, he was able to create his solution quite handily. By cutting a metal buoy in half, and fabricating a round hood, he had invented the first kettle grill.

Once that was done, it was a matter of marketing this strange looking brazier grill but it quickly gained a loyal following. Enough so that the metal works company was renamed Weber-Stephen Products Co. Within just a few short years, George Stephen was able to buy out the company and became the sole owner.

American grillers now had a way to protect their steaks and burgers from the wind and rain, and the lid also sealed in a moist and smoky new flavor. It must have made a big difference to consumers because Weber grills cost $50 back in the early 1950's while other open brazier grills could be had for about $7. Oh yes, there was probably a status thing going on too, just like we see today with the monster cookers purchased for simple family cooking.

Eventually, the brand spread beyond the Midwest when it was introduced in retailer centers around the country. The era of covered backyard grilling was upon us and there was no looking back.

The Best Weber Grill for You

The great thing about Weber is that they produce a quality product for entry level grillers, a premium grill for those who want more and excellent high-end grills. Most companies competing for the average home BBQ chef cut corners on at least some of their grills, but you're going to get quality with Weber all the way up the line.

Weber Spirit E310 Gas Grill - A few of the grills I've owned have fallen apart within a few years; or at least the starter has stopped working. Most people don't factor in the cost of replacing a cheap grill every few years.

Look for one that will last 3 times that long. You'll pay just a little bit more, but you'll be ahead in the long run. This is a great example of an entry level grill that's high quality and will last you a long time. It' also big enough to handle the needs of a family. So, if you're on a tight budget but you still want a quality product that will last, this is certainly one you should consider. I would put a lower end Weber grill up against just about any other brand's comparable product. Make sure you check out our consumer reviews of the Weber product line because there are a lot of factors; including what climate you live in, etc.

Weber Genesis E-310 Gas Grill - Ready for an even better grill? Weber's Genesis line is a good balance between their entry level Spirit grills and their high end Summit grills.

Once again, you're buying a grill that may actually last 10 years, so don't be put off by a slightly higher price than it's competitors. It's worth it in the long run, so dig just a little deeper and you'll be making a great investment.

Once you start budgeting for high priced grills like this, I think it's worth checking out what the competition has to offer. High end stuff is going to generally be made with quality materials. But the cool gadgetry coming from new innovations is something that you should at least tease yourself with. That's the beauty of competition, there's always something new to think about

It's tough to find a pattern of complaints about Weber Grills . They are truly a high quality company and make a great product. All things considered, the granddaddy of outdoor cooking probably makes the highest quality and affordable options out there.
