Weber Genesis S-310 Gas Grill

by Herb
(Stuart, FL)

I bought this grill in April 2010. The cook box is cast aluminum and the cook grate is stainless steel. I am already experiencing galvanic corrosion where the two come in contact. According to my research if stainless steel and aluminum are in contact and moisture is present, the aluminum will sacrifice (corrode).

This is without doubt a design flaw and will prematurely deteriorate the cook box. Weber has offered to replace the cook box. However, I would have to disassemble the grill to replace it. I do not feel that this is a permanent solution to the problem. Therefore I will be looking for a new grill.

I think you are needlessly fretting about this.

While you may be seeing some corrosion as a result of galvanic action the potential for this to corrode to the point where it is an actual problem is very small. The grill will probably be 20 years old before that would become any sort of problem.

Are you sure what you are seeing is actually "corrosion"? Bare aluminum will develop a white chalky looking coating due to oxidation. That coating actually then acts as a protective coating. It may be unsightly but it is not "rust" or "corrosion" in the sense that the material will continue to degrade until all you have is a pile of "dust".

I have a 20 year old Genesis 2000 that has had stainless steel flavorizer bars and stainless steel grates in contact with the cast aluminum box from the start and have not yet seen any evidence of galvanic action. Structurally the box is as sound as it was on day one. Cosmetically it is in need of a makeover (which I plan to do this summer) and parts of the box do have the oxidized coating but after my rebuild of it it will look brand new.
