Ugly Drum Smoker or UDS

A home made smoker that costs less than $100.00 to build. I really enjoy cooking on my "trash can". It's just a 55 gal drum, standing upright, with a couple of 22.5" Weber racks & a 22.5" Weber lid. Cooks faster & easier than almost anything else and is very stingy on charcoal usage.

ugly drum smoker NEW

well guys,i built my UDS right off the internet pages. simple to build. drill,drill bits,nuts n bolts, all by hand no welding at all.added a few extras .wheels table top and exhaust stack. But bottom line it works great!!! took 3 hours to build with a few beers. cooked on it tonight in 21 degree temps.89 minutes and perfect chicken breasts and home made hot links. the temp stayed at 235 and never moved.. the meats juicy tender full of hickory flavor,the rub and sauce topped it off..
All in all I will make more UDS's for family n friends. What a great smoker.

Adapting the weber style lid to the UDS

Adapting that lid to the UDS is a challenge. I used the lid ring, sawed it in half around the diameter, built some "L" brackets, bolted them to the lid and then tack welded them to the split ring. I sealed the small crack between the ring and the lid with some high heat silicon, and it works great! I know some guy's just cut the rolled ring off the top and bend the sharp edge in a little and it fits but is looks unfinished to me. what ever works!

Weber top

I see you added a Weber top. I am trying that and it looks as if I will have to do some metal work to make it fit - misses by about 1/4" did you have that problem? and how did you fix it?
