Kenmore 3-burner (unknown model #)

We bought this unit about 1 year or so ago, to "upgrade" our grate. Yes, we bought it because it had a (supposedly) better grate... but woe to us who knew so little about Gas grill design!

This grill leaks heat like a sieve! I mean, the cover gets insanely hot and the heat dissipates like it's in a vacuum! Don't leave the cover open in a mild breeze or a ton of your temperature goes bye-bye, in an instant!

I don't remember this being an issue with our Char-broil Quik-set which was a gift several years earlier. But I think it had a cast aluminum lid, not some thin sheet metal cover like this one. The back of the unit pours out heat like crazy, too. Great when it's cold outside... just cozy up to the back of the grill to stay toasty warm while grilling!

The fact that these grates are porcelain-coated cast iron makes for nice grill marks, but the rust I'm dealing with now is horrible looking! Can't say whether or not these grates hold heat better than whatever, because the temperature gauge shows a 100 degree drop in a matter of seconds, if I dare open the lid in a breeze.

Now the *only* thing I (kinda) LIKE about this unit is the grates (good grill marks, but non-stick? WHAT non-stick? EVERYTHING sticks now!), but I think I'd go back to my old Char Broil quick-set if I had the chance...

Methinks it necessary to do a LOT of deep research to insure you get the absolute BEST gas grill you possibly can, but I sense the way manufacturers are, there will be compromises in one area or another, you're gonna notice sooner or later.

I'm tempted to try designing and building my own gas grill... designed, from the bottom up, to be a 100% no compromise gas grill you NEVER worry or complain about...

Now, where's my torch welder and goggles?
