The Char-Griller series of charcoal grills has been, maybe unfairly, lumped into the category of "cheapo" grills and smokers for a variety of reasons. But you should know that there is a huge, and loyal, following of barbecue enthusiasts who say Chargrillers are woefully underestimated.

Let's face it, we all can't simply run out and spend hundreds of dollars, if not thousands of dollars, on products just because it's cool. These people, and they are in the majority folks, are looking for an effective charcoal grill or smoker that won't break their bank, but can still be depended on to deliver a quality result.

Here's the thing, there are those who love low and slow cooking but don't love the tinkering and management process. They just want to set their cook up and then leave it until it's time to eat. Fair enough! I can be like that too at times.

And then there are the folks who love barbecue but are all about the process; from building mods onto their smokers to hanging out with a 12 pack while they monitor the temperature during a smoke.

While the latter would probably be thrilled to own an auto-pilot smoker like the Big Green Egg or the Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker, they also like getting down and dirty with their barbecue grills.

Enter the Char-Griller

Chargriller has a fairly simple, yet extremely functional, series of grills at an extremely attractive price point.

When it comes to "Cheapo" grills and smokers, Char-Griller has a leg up on the competition. From a feature standpoint, they have engineered in things that the others don't have. Here are a few examples that set these products apart from the competitors:

  • Main chamber and Side Fire Box E-Z dump ash pan

  • Double bottom main chamber and side fire box
  • Adjustable grate
  • Heat gauge
  • Fire grate
  • Rotisserie adaptable
  • Side shelf on main and side drawer on side fire box
  • Warmer rack adaptable and the side fire box is warmer plate adaptable
  • You can add coals while grilling
  • Side fire box has a cooking grate
  • Cylinder shape for convection cooking
  • All charcoal grill models are side fire box adaptable
  • The most features, yet the lowest price among its competitors

The Bottom Line on Char-Griller Charcoal Grills and Smokers

If you're just starting out, and you're don't have a lot of experience, there is nothing better than to use a unit that will take you through the process; installing mods and understanding the why's and wherefore's. No, you won't be able to just go to sleep on long cooks because these will require some management. But, you'll learn what barbecue is all about.

At some point you may want to trade up, and that's OK. These are a great starting point in your grilling adventure. But I know expert BBQ Guru's who still proudly use their Char-Grillers because they've never let them down.
