The Char-Griller Wrangler is the slightly smaller brother of the Char-Griller Super Pro. This is the unit I see it my local Kroger each spring, along with the Char-Griller Duo.

As with most (if not all) of the Char-Griller line, you can also attach an optional side fire box for Texas style smoking. I can tell you first hand that these are pretty cool units (I personally own a Super Pro) and that it beats the pants off trying to smoke a pork butt on a gas grill for 12 hours (see ya later propane tank).

Once again, these units are considered to be cheap, because they are....at least price-wise. I've found them to be pretty solid construction for the price. I'm definitely not complaining because times are tough!

Here's a basic run down of the Char-Griller Wrangler. If you have some experience with any of the Char-Griller line, we'd really appreciate a quick review on our Char-Griller review page. One paragraph will do!

Highlights

  • A fairly large grill that will still fit on the patio
  • Easy to find, Kroger has them and so does your local Lowe's Home Improvement Center
  • They look great!

Char-Griller Wrangler Features

"This is a very nice grill but there's not much of a reason to buy it when the Super Pro is only $10.00 more." ~Amazon.com Review

"I cook at least 2-3 times a week and love it love it love it !" ~Amazon Review

"I definitely recommend this grill. It's good for when just us two are eating or when we're feeding a decent sized crowd. My dad has the same grill except it's one size up from this one. They both are great. HIGHLY recommended!" ~Amazon.com Review
  • 640 square inch grilling, cooking or smoking area
  • The cast iron cooking grates provide an even distribution of heat.
  • It has very sturdy legs
  • The grates come in sections, are easy to remove and make it a snap to tend to the charcoal without having to remove a large grate.
  • The charcoal bed is adjustable in height from the grill surface, which makes temperature control more than spinning vents.
  • There's a built in heat gauge
  • The ash pan is very easy to dump, almost too easy!
  • As with the Super Pro, a warming rack is included.
  • The optional side fire box takes about 30 minutes to attach.
  • Very well constructed of heavy gauge steel. It's built to last.
  • Powder coat black finish. Looks good. Stays that way with care.

Char-Griller Wrangler Pros

  • This is an extremely affordable grill for what you get. Well under $150 last time I checked.
  • There's a great support community available
  • Lowes usually has them and the side fire boxes in stock.
  • Char-Grillers have the most features for their price point
  • It still has more cooking area than most of the high end, low maintenance smokers like the WSM.

Cons

  • It will require some mods to be a truly excellent low and slow smoker
  • Not as fuel efficient as some designs
  • You will need to take care of the unit so it doesn't rust over time.

Char-Griller Wrangler Model #2123 Summary

Something I new before I purchased my Super Pro is that these units will require modifications if you intend to do more than grill. In other words, if you are planning to smoke something with the side fire box, especially something that takes more than a few hours, you'll need to make some modifications. Not a problem because they are clearly spelled out over at Barbecuebible.com

Basically, the side firebox's ash pan is so close to the charcoal bed that it eventually restricts airflow. Many have simply added some straps a little higher than the current charcoal bed and used a stainless or chrome basket of some sort to sit on top and fill with charcoal. I ran into this problem on my first long smoke.

You may also want to extend the smoke stack down to the grill surface so the hot air flows across the food instead of above it. Again, pretty simple problem to deal with.
