Bubba Keg Grill At Home Depot

I just saw the Bubba Keg Grill at Home Depot hear in the Woodstock, GA area. Apparently, the only one they have in stock is the floor model, already assembled. I chatted with one of the store personnel about it and she told me that they were only ordering one at a time and when this one sold, they would place an order for a new one.

I know I was frustrated when Weber was doing this with the new Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker (WSM), especially since this was going on during the holiday. I don't don't know whether this is a production issue at this point (since it's new to market) or if the demand is that low. I can tell you, after seeing this unit first hand, I'm going to do as much as I can to promote the Bubba Keg Grill at Home Depot here. It is really a solid grilling, smoking and roasting appliance!

Any way, I looked at this cooker very closely and it is definitely slick and I couldn't believe how tightly it sealed up. Man, after this Chargriller, I would really enjoy something like this. Another thing that's a big deal for me is that it is so well insulated, that I don't have to worry too much about having my toddler son nearby. I had just started the fire on my side fire box the other day when you felt the need to put both hands on it. Fortunately, it wasn't even warm yet. So much for having the kids around.

Here's why this could take off

While Primo Grills and Big Green Egg Grills are really cool, there are three major hurdles they face in gaining mass appeal.

  • The vast majority of homeowners are totally bought-in to the convenience of gas grills. Let's face it, microwave ovens are used more than conventional ovens because they're quicker and easier.
  • They are very expensive when compared to a few hundred dollars for a gas grill.
  • You seldom see them in home improvement warehouses where most people are shopping these days.
  • They are not portable - I know I said three, but this one isn't really major.

Now, here you have a Bubba Keg grill at Home Depot sitting right out in front of all the gas grills. It definitely draws attention. It's not only an attractive design, you can tell it's sturdy and will last a long time. It's also going to get people talking because it's different.

Getting the Message Out about the Bubba Keg Grill at Home Depot

Now for the fun part. How do you convince gas grillers that a charcoal grill is the way to go? That's the tough one. I try all day long here, not because gas grills are bad, but because there's more to life than convenience. Have we forgotten about flavor, and the experience of cooking?

One of the things I've noticed lately is how costly it is to run my gas grill. I must have gone through 3 20 lb tanks in the course of 2 months this spring. Sure, I was doing more slow cooking and it was hard. My cheap Chargriller burns through an entire bag of charcoal briquettes because the fire box is so leaky.

But if you've seen the latest video from Bubba Keg Grill on cooking low and slow, you'll see that he barely but any lump charcoal in and after 4 hours, most of it, including the wood chips, hadn't burned yet! Now, if barbecue is about doing things inexpensively, then a chimney of lump (at most) to smoke ribs is the way to go.

Somehow, Home Depot needs to get convinced to push these things a little harder. But the fact that they are there, and will be on Amazon soon, is a good thing for turning people onto this type of cooker. And your certainly can't complain about the price which is starting at $599.

I'm hoping the Bubba Keg at Home Depot will have great success because I'd like to see them be able to expand the product line and offer different sizes, just like it's competitors. I'd love to see an XL Bubba Keg grill for people that want to entertain a bit. Who cares if that one fits on the hitch? Gotta make sacrifices when you're on the road.

Now the only thing for me to decide is whether to dedicate an entire website to it like the WSM has. That site has a huge following. Maybe the Bubba Keg Grill will be lucky enough to capture the hearts and minds of grillers and BBQ'ers around the world like Weber has. It's so unique, it has a chance.

In addition to buying the Bubba Keg grill at Home Depot, I understand it's also available at Sam's Club. Even better, you'll soon be able to order a Bubba Keg grill at Home Depot dot com and pick it up locally. Or, you'll be able to find deals at Amazon dot com and have it shipped. I can't wait!
