The Big Steel Keg Convection GrillBubba Keg Grill's New Brand and New FeaturesWhen I got online, I found that they had Bubba Keg grills for about $150 less than what I paid. That got my attention. I was wondering if maybe the manufacturer had done a price cut to pick up the volume. When I started doing searches on Amazon, I found that the prices were way higher than the $599 it used to be. And something else was odd. I couldn't quite place it. And then I realized that I was looking at a totally different product. Amazon was returning the Big Steel Keg Convection Grill and I was thinking, what the heck is going on here. Does In Zone have any idea that someone did a blatant rip-off? It was an exact copy right down to the branding placard - except it said "Big Steel Keg". OK, it was time to rush to their website. I jumped to the forums and much to my chagrin, they had done a complete rebranding of the Bubba Keg grill, along with some serious (but subtle) re-engineering. The re-work was based off comments from the user community so I plunged in to see what all had been done to improve this grill I love so much. Big Steel Keg Convection Grill - New FeaturesThe first thread I saw was "Re-introducing The Big Steel Keg" by the forums chief administrator Ricky Bobby. Appearance - Now that I've got that off my chest, let's take a look at the new Bubba Keg - I mean Big Steel Keg. There are two things that you can notice right off the bat. First, the label doesn't say Bubba Keg any more. Bums me out as I considered it a badge of honor, however, there are some obvious problems with the brand. Some guys aren't good ole boys or don't want to be associated with them. And most wives will roll their eyes every time they see it sitting on the patio. Next, you might have noticed that it's a darker color. It's said that this color won't show some of the wear and tear that the silver one has. They are calling this color Terra. I think it ends up looking more like a Big Green Egg, but having a Silver Bubba Keg, it's definitely showing signs of usage after a year.
Warranty - The warranty on the body and stand has been increased from 5 to 10 years because due to improvements to the construction of the unit. I believe that brings it in line with the competition like the Egg Performance - One of the biggest complaints of the Bubba Keg grill that has been addressed in the Big Steel Keg Convection grill is the difficulty to maintain low temperatures over a long period of time. This wasn't because of heat retention, it had more to do with controlling airflow. I never had huge problems with this, but did have a few occasions where the fire went out on overnight cooks.
The new design has re-tooled the openings of the top vent. Notice that when you close it down to a sliver, there is still room for air to flow through a little tear drop. They've made a similar alteration on the bottom vent. Instead a rectangular screen, it comes to points on both ends. So when you close it down to a sliver, there is a small triangle for airflow which really adds some serious control over a vertical sliver. They've also improved the seal on the upper vent to prevent airflow and moisture penetration. And the gasket that seals the hood to the body has improved. Usability - The side trays have been set to be farther from the grill body so there is more usable space, as well as better access for cleaning the grill whilt they're in place.
The trailer hitch also has security added in the form security holes which can be used to add locks.
But here's the thing about the trailer hitch - it doesn't come as a standard accessory any longer. For a lot of people, that may not mean much. I've used mine a bit because i could at my wife's horse farm occasionally, but for others, having a grill cover is more important, and this is now a standard feature for the Big Steel Keg Convection Grill.
