BBQ Gas GrillsHaving said all of that, there are grills out there that try to bring the BBQ experience to a gas grills. But, if I'm being honest, including a smoke tray on a gas grill is almost as off target as providing an automatic BBQ sauce applicator. These grills will have to do more than that to be taken seriously. So, what do I consider to be a true "gas" BBQ grill? The only thing that comes to mind is a propane gas smoker. Unlike a traditional gas grill, which is designed with the same intent as a microwave oven (to get the job done fast), a propane smoker is designed to cook for long periods at low temperatures, just like it's charcoal-based brothers. Propane Smokers ARE BBQ Gas Grills
Personally, I've never used a propane smoker, however I've heard people say that they aren't bad. In fact, I've heard folks say that electric smokers can get the job done too. To me though, adding wood chips to a BBQ gas grill / propane smoker can't possibly get you the same taste you can get off of lump charcoal or even briquettes. Propane smokers are most likely used for convenience, and possibly because they're is less to clean up. Are you loosing flavor when you do this? I love that smoky essence you get just from charcoal fired grills, even without extra wood chunks, or chips, so I'm not convinced you can get that same, addictive, clinging essense with gas. Maybe I'll try it some time, but I really doubt it. I'm interested in what you all think. Do propane smokers match up? Yay or nay?
