What exactly is a brisket, and why would you want to prepare a BBQ brisket? After revving up your gas or charcoal grill for a cookout, tailgate party or other occasion, one of the key questions is: what will you barbecue? Some of the traditional options are hamburgers, hotdogs, and chicken. But how about thinking outside the box and choosing a barbecue brisket instead?

What in the world is a brisket? This is the lower-front region of the cow, and is synonymous with the breast region of a chicken. Ironically, the brisket portion is usually one of the toughest regions of the cow. However, you can get some fantastic results by using slow cooking and constant basting. That's why grilling is perfect for preparing a brisket. The low temperature, long cooking time, and smoky flavor are perfect. If you have a gas or charcoal grill, here's a tasty BBQ brisket recipe that you should try.

To prepare the marinade, you'll need to gather the following ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder

  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper

  • 1.5 teaspoons of salt

  • 1 tablespoon of wine vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon of horseradish

  • 1.5 tablespoons of lemon juice

  • 1.5 tablespoons of mustard

  • ½ cup of olive oil

  • 1.5 cups of red wine

Here's how to make and use the marinade. After combining all of the ingredients, pour it over the brisket and then place the meat in your refrigerator. Allow the meat to marinade overnight. If you can allow the meat to marinate for 24 hours, then it's even better. Make sure to flip the meat occasionally, so the marinating process is thorough. When the marinating is complete, remove the brisket from the marinade. Create a "mop" (baste) by boiling the leftover marinade for five minutes.

Before cooking your BBQ brisket, make sure to trim off the fat. The amount of fat that you leave on the meat is a matter of personal preference. Remember that the brisket is one of the toughest cuts of meat, so you'll want to leave some fat on the meat. That will add both moisture and flavor to the brisket.

Next, add barbecue sauce and dry rub periodically to the meat. When choosing a BBQ sauce, you have multiple options. You could make it from scratch, buy a commercial BBQ sauce, or buy a commercial BBQ sauce and then spice it up with your own ingredients.

The spices that you add to the meat can also vary. Some of the most popular ones are salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, and cayenne. Do some experimentation to find the perfect blend that suits your preference!

When should you add the BBQ sauce and spices? Do it once after cooking meat for 30 minutes at 225 degrees Fahrenheit. Then add it again after the meat has cooked for another 30 minutes.

If you want to add some variety to your barbecuing, then consider BBQ-ing a brisket. By using the right ingredients and methods, you can transform a tough piece of meat into a savory meal that everyone will love!
