Using a barbecue grill rating as a way to make your BBQ grill decision can be a crap shoot. First of all, you've got potential bias in the rating. Believe me, I'm somewhat biased because I prefer certain types of grills over others and it tends to show in my recommendations. On the other hand, the more theory based approaches that depend on features and construction materials can break down to. Sometimes it's just hard to fit cold hard science into the daily lives of the average consumer; no matter how hard they try.

That's why I prefer a more empirical approach to rating grills. That means it's based on observation - or reality. Capitalism and free markets will always tell us what the best of the best is. So, I like to take a look at a couple of real observations

1. First, I look at consumer barbecue grill rating on commercial sites like Amazon - It's important to note, however, that reviews and ratings tend to be written by a few vocal individuals and there are studies to prove this. So be warned.
   
2. I look at the actual sales of units - kind of like a leader board approach to see who's selling the most. Generally, there is a reason something sells - e.g. fits the budget, excels at the job, last a long time, etc.

The reason my barbecue grill rating uses the first factor is because while there are a few vocal people on either side of the issue, dissatisfied people will tend to be louder, so you're going to see them popping up on these social review sites; whether it's About.com or Amazon.com. I pick Amazon, because they also have sales data, which is important for the second consideration

If your looking for a charcoal BBQ grill then these are the ones I recommend you consider. Not just based on these barbecue grill rating guide ratings, but also because the general buzz in the market. You'll see a lot of Weber products here. There's a reason for that.

Weber 827020 22 1/2-Inch Performer Charcoal Grill with Propane Gas Ignition - 4.9 out of 5.0 stars. This is a cool grill in a couple of ways. First, it's got it's own built in work table which is always nice to have. Second, it's got a clever cleaning system so dealing with ashes is not that big of a deal.

There is also a coal bucket that keeps your fuel dry until you use it and the really cool thing is it has a gas ignition so getting the coals lit is as simple as pressing a button.

Weber 781001 26-Inch One-Touch Gold Grill - 5.0 out of 5.0 This is a great kettle grill from Weber. It's huge at 26 inches. And best of all it has a one touch cleaning system that makes maintenance a snap.

If you're into charcoal BBQ grills, then this is a really nice addition to your casual backyard. The size will accommodate family and friends. And it comes on wheels so it's easy to get out of the way when your done.

Char-Griller 2222 Pro Deluxe Charcoal Grill & Smoker  - 4.8 out of 5.0 stars. I happen to own a Char-griller so I can also tell you what I know. People that own them do like them even though they aren't heavy duty construction. That's because they are inexpensive and they work!

Grilling for large groups - GREAT! Smoking ribs and Pork Butts - Lot's of room but very inefficient in my experience. I'll stick to the Bubba Keg or a Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker for that.

Weber 751001 22 1/2-Inch One-Touch Gold Charcoal Grill, Black - 4.6 out of 5.0 stars. OK, this is the little brother to the One Touch we looked at above. If you don't need as much cooking area, this 22 inch model will still do a lot for you and take up even less space.

The great thing about these charcoal BBQ grills is that they're so easy to clean. The one touch system makes dealing with left over ash a simple task. All the while, you can rest assured that being a Weber, you're getting a unit that's got 60 plus years of engineering behind it. It just works! That's why it's in the barbecue grill rating guide in the first place.

Gas Barbecue Grill Rating Guide

Funny how Weber seems to dominate the barbecue grill rating guides. Certainly, not all grills are sold at Amazon, but I don't think it would matter. Weber dominates the market because of their well known brand, and excellent products.

Weber 586002 Q 320 Portable Outdoor Gas Grill - 4.8 out of 5 stars While this falls into the portable gas grill category, it's also has the highest rating by shoppers at Amazon. "Unless your cooking for an army, this is the one to get" Need I say more?

Weber 3751001 Genesis E-320 Propane Gas Grill, Black - 4.9 out of 5 stars The Genesis line is Weber work horse. Sitting right in the middle, it provides all the features you crave, the craftsmanship you deserve and at a pretty reasonable price.
