A Whole different kind of story about Member's Mark

by R Floyd
(Fort Worth Texas)

alright gather round and follow my story. Tonight 1/8/2012 I was returning from a trip out of town and as I entered my neighborhood I saw this huge shiney stainless steel grill sitting on the curb for the trash pickup. I couldn't stand it so I went home got a flashlight and walked back to take a closer look. I noticed it was a large Member's Mark grill. I opened it up and determined it had not received much use. The side burner had not ever been used. The tank was missing but the regulator and hose was in place and looked in very good condition.

I could tell the ceramic flame handlers were broken but my interest continued to sore. Now realize this was 10:00PM and I live 3 blocks away from this grill. I returned home without the grill as it was very heavy. there is hope because it has wheels. I looked up Member's Mark and found one in worse condition than this one on ebay for $699. I sent a text to my neighbor and determined he was not in bed yet so I asked if he had seen the grill...he said no. When I told him it was a Member's Mark he said let's go get it.

Off we go in his truck to retrieve my big find. We tried to lift the grill into the truck. No my neighbor has had 2 back surgeries and I have a really bad back but we are willing to risk it all for this grill. No luck on the lifting. We summize it will not fit into the back of the truck as it it too big. (Hey it has wheels). He determines that a furniture dolly is the way to go so he states that he is going home to get the furniture dolly and return.

I start pushing this grill up the hill to my house in the dark at 10:30 PM and oh what a racket it makes. After about a half block he returns with a better idea. Since it was rolling already why not just tie a rope around it and tow it with his truck. I would walk behind and steer as he pulled it very slowly. very quickly a rope is secured and off we go up the hill a pickup truck towing a large grill with a 63 year old man running behind steering. Hey I don't make this up.

When we reach my house he turns into the driveway just as the front of the grill digs into the curp and begins to tilt over toward the vehicle. Remember I am steering from behind so I do what anyone would do, I hang on for dear life as the grill tilts over about 45 degrees and lifts me off the ground. I am yelling to my neighbor to stop and back up as the lights begin to come on in the surrounding houses. It is now almost 11:00 PM. He finally hears me and backs up slowly allowing me to get my feet back on the ground. We then get the grill into my yard and perform an inspection. I think it can be saved and restored.

Since I'm retired and love to tinker, I am going to rebuild this grill and give you a play by play complete with photos until they kick me off this site. In the end you will receive a very in depth review of a Member's Mark Grill...stay tuned.

==========

Thanks Mr. Floyd. We're looking forward to it

I must have had too many beers but I swear I saw somewhere on this site that said "upload pictures" but I cannot find it now. So I will try to tell you what I took pictures of today. Overall on the outside the grill looks pretty good. Looks are deceiving!! I looked closely at the grill plates and discovered they were metal wrapped with stainless steel. How do I know this well the stainless steel has burned off exposing the steel underneath. Interesting. I dug a little deeper. Hmm the burners look ok however when I removed them (3)I discovered one of them is really burned out, rusted and coming apart. 2 good burners 1 bad $$$$. Well I dig a little deeper and the deramic flame handlers appear to be in pretty good shape a few are broken but no big deal, I push on. the lower grate that holds the ceramic flame handlers well it too was stainless steel wrapped around metal. How did I know...it was peeling away most of the stainless was burned away.$$$$ I am not discouraged, I push on and inspect the grease plate. it looks like stainless steel and has held up pretty good, probably useable but rusted on the rear edge. Only the front screws are holding it in place. Not gonna scare me...I press on. I discover a drawer on the front. I opened the drawer and it was full I do mean full of rusted metal chips. close inspection from the rear determined the floor of the grill probably regular metal was completely rusted into bits and pieces and had fell into the drawer. That piece doesn't look too expensive. Ok so what have I learned today? Maybe I should take this grill to the street and let the trash people have it but that shiny stainless steel just begs of "clean me up I will be good for you". So far I need one possibly 2 grill plates, 1 burner, grease plate, bottom of grill plate. Also I need a good cleaning solution as Member's Mark does not recommend oven cleaner. I will research and determine what is a good grease remover on stainless steel. Now some of you people who read this could suggest stuff to try. That would be great. Now I am going to price out the parts and determine if I need to have this grill put down or do I give it a new life. Man I need a beer after all this. Also smelling all this grease made me hungry. I gotta go grill something, maybe some armadillo on the halfshell.

Members Mark Update 1 NEW
by: RFloyd

Well today the weather was nice and I had already completed golf with my neighbor so I decided to take a closer look at the soon to be like new grill. I noticed the lid was all loose and looked like one side was not connected. I dug around in the ash area and found the screws and parts that had fell out and replaced them. The lid works good as new. I guess the previous owners were not mechanical enough to figure this out or as I suspect, she threw him and his grill out on the curb. She spent all weekend taking stuff to the street until finally on Sunday night she put the grill out for the trash people. I bet the husband is out of town and this is her way to get back at him. Maybe I stumbled right into a major domestic disturbance. Oh well, that is enough work for today, I am needing a beer all that work made me thirsty. Stay tuned for more grill adventures.
